A person in a soft cardigan sips from a mug by a bright window full of plants, with a heavy grey blanket draped over the couch beside them. Overlay cards show a gentle day planned to fit their energy, with tea by the window, a slow morning, a short walk and a quiet evening, plus planned rest from 2 to 4 pm and a 12-day routine milestone.

The energy gap

Ordinary days don’t have to drain you this much.

Invisible sensory, social and cognitive demands add up all day, and when you’re told to self-regulate without being shown how, needing rest starts to feel like failing.

Energy regulation

Is This You?

Energy regulation differences impact 📆 routines, 💼 responsibilities, 🧠 regulation, ☺️ rest, and 💬 relationships. Here are some of the experiences our ND-Affirming OTs have supported.

A woman lies face-down across her sofa, one arm hanging to the floor. Her laptop, phone and a mug sit on the coffee table, with a half-finished painting nearby and her child’s backpack by the door.
Sprints Crashes

Boom & Bust Cycles

You go all in on work, a passion project, or a weekend with the kids. Then you crash. Recovery takes longer each time, and you’re wondering how to get back without doing it all again.

A woman in pyjamas sits on the edge of her bed with a hand pressed to her temple and a heating pad around her waist. A forearm crutch leans beside her, there’s a pill organizer on the nightstand, and laundry is piled up in the closet.
Fatigue Pacing

ND + Co-Occurring Conditions

A good day becomes catch-up day. Then a flare, PEM, or brain fog wipes out the next three. Your body keeps changing the rules, and you can’t predict what everyday tasks will cost.

A woman in her fifties with long greying hair rests her cheek in her hand and stares at an open planner covered in sticky notes. Several notes have fallen onto the desk beside a stack of books and a cup of tea.
Peri-Menopause Cycles

Midlife Energy Changes

You’ve held everything together for decades. Now your hormones and energy shift week to week, and your usual strategies have stopped working. You might be recognizing your neurodivergence, too. Pushing harder no longer gets you through.

A man still wearing his work lanyard sits at the kitchen table in front of a bowl of cereal, looking exhausted. Behind him, children play among scattered toys.
Masking Sensory

Masking All Day

You look fine at work. Masking, sensory overload, and replaying conversations use up everything. You get home to noise, kids, and responsibilities with nothing left. Cereal is dinner again.

A teen in a hoodie and headphones sits on their bedroom floor against the bed with their eyes closed, knees pulled in. University brochures, a phone and a dropped backpack lie nearby.
School Transitions

Drained After School

Your teen disappears into their room after school. Noise, friendships, and appointments have used up everything. Everyone’s asking about graduation and next steps. They can’t explain what’s wrong, and you’re trying to understand.

A bearded man with glasses and a hearing aid rubs his eyes at his desk late at night. Around his computer screens are takeout containers, an empty energy drink can, a mug and a pair of running shoes.
Interoception Sleep

Exhausted & Don’t Know Why

Twelve hours at a screen. Poor sleep. Meals and movement slip. You can’t tell what restores you or drains you. Nothing seems to help, and you’re starting to blame yourself.

Getting Started

Energy regulation FAQ

Energy and capacity, explained

Answers for Autistic and AuDHD teens and adults, and the people who support them.

Invisible demands add up: masking, sensory input, social effort, decisions and physical symptoms. They rarely show on a calendar, but they still cost energy. OT helps you see where your energy actually goes, so the cost of a day makes sense.

It can be one or several. Ongoing exhaustion, post-exertional malaise or brain fog deserve a medical check, and we work alongside your doctor. OT focuses on daily life, whatever the cause. A free Discovery Call can help you sort out next steps.

Pacing means planning activity and rest before you run out, instead of recovering after a crash. It helps break boom and bust cycles. Your OT helps you spot early warning signs, set limits that fit your body and adjust them as your capacity changes.

Yes, and it often helps on low-energy days because there’s no travel. Camera off, breaks and ending early are all fine. Your OT can review your week with you on screen and adjust your plan as you go.

OTs look at what drains and restores you across routines, sensory input, work and relationships. Together you modify demands, build recovery into your days, plan around cycles like hormones or flares, and grow capacity gradually without pushing through.

Our neuroaffirming OTs work with Autistic and AuDHD teens and adults on pacing, demands and recovery, including alongside co-occurring conditions. Telehealth is available across BC, Alberta, Ontario and Atlantic Canada, with in-person OT in select cities. Start with a free Discovery Call.
